The Horizon Placed at Home

Pak ,from Hong Kong, drew a horizontal line on the Hong Kong map.  This line goes across 5 sea shore.   So, Pak collected a bottle of sea water in each of them.  The height and the horizon of these bottles are the same,  Pak has built a continuous  sea horizon at home.  

People always tried to get something like souvenirs, to remember their trip. well if they bring a horizon back home, they will be super into "souvenirs" - a thing that is kept as a reminder of a place.

A Travel Without Visual Experience 

Malaysia, 2009-10-7 to 11 (5-days/4-nights tour group)

Pak joined a trip to Malaysia, a country he had never been before.   He either closed or covered up his eyes throughout the whole trip (in order to pretend he was blind).  During the trip, I did sightseeing and photographing.  But instead of seeing, he used his body to sense and experience the surrounding.    

There could be a few layers of "Seeing".  Sometimes before I sleep, I see when I open your eyes, or when I close them.   And I see when I cover up your eyes with cloth but still opening eyes physically.  When your eyes were open, it gets much easier to determine directions and make sound , visual and sensual records.      But when you close your eyes,  you could feel the darkness and the float, which makes the body floating into great fancy,  with imaginations and illusion.

Liu Bolin
Liu, from Shandong China, managed to camouflage himself into different surroundings.

His art is a protest against the actions of China government, who shut down his art studio years before and persecutes artists. 

I think he was trying to say that artist were strong against the compression.  And he/ they become barely visible in the real life.   It's hard to notice but they are here, probably everywhere.

Hong Kong Breathes Campaign

A Graphic Design VI branded advertising campaign for the City of Hong Kong created by Satsuki Atsumi, Tisha Boonyawatana, Jack Curry, Charisse Panganiban, and Baktaash Sorkhabi.

They realised the air pollution is very serious because of the depreciation of transportation.    So these designers made a brand mark.

The brand mark is a way of speaking without speaking; a form of silent protest. In this way, we are being mindful of Chinese culture in that our brand is bold without being vulgar. It is earnest but respectful – a way for the people of Hong Kong to speak up without necessarily speaking out.

This is very clever to start the campaign in grassroots first.  And the brand mark was outstanding enough to let everyone see what we should be aware of.

I love her work!!   She has the gift of seeing into people's heart and the society.  Her works were mostly about our daily life.  Everyone in Hong Kong experienced those situations she drawsm but we just could not tell it by words or by illustrations.    The way she tells a story is so genuine and self-centred.   I love it!

2. Unhappily Ever After - Jeff Hong (Alice In Wonderland)

Alice in Wonderland becomes "Alice in Drug-land".  It seems that Hong, the artist thinks the story itself is very pathetic.    Alice was insane, living in her own dream. And In when she was back to reality and out of her dream, she can only continue her wonderland adventure by taking drugs.

3.Martin De Pasquale

Martin De Pasquale 's ps images were very magical and dramatic. His work tells a story of shaving, not by shaver but his hand and grass mower.    This was disgusting but frenziedly charming.

4. New Species Research Project - Chuang pei-xin

This was a scientific research on Pikachu, the famous animated character.   The whole body of work was displayed in a museum manner.  

I was attracted by the fact that Pikachu was given a life when the artist took away his life by slicing its skin.   It becomes a real creature, a history, an evidence showing its existence becomes more real than reality.

5.  Dictator with Toy Animals by Chunlong Sun

Celebrity is a series of manipulated photos by retoucher Chunlong Sun, from Beijing and photographer Zhou Yulong.   

He created a hilarious set of portraits featuring the world's most notorious dictators, including Muammar Gaddafi, clutching cute stuffed animals.  This depicts that even the most harsh people has his soft side.

6.  Korean woman recovering after plastic surgery

 " Your Face, Your Fate"

When I first saw this image, I was deeply confused if people get happier after reformation. 

Do they really feel  disgraceful about their naturally born appearance?   

Plastic surgery was known as a tool to get beautiful and let people gain self-esteem.  Yet, they didn't obtain it on "their own" (their own in-build condition).   Is this happiness real or fake?  

In fact, plastic surgery is very popular in Korean society.  Korean has a strong desire getting themselves more and more beautiful.  It was known that most of the 16 year-olds beg their parents to pay for their first surgery as a birthday gift.   

7. Freak Show - Diane Arbus

This is a portrait of transvestite. Diane Arbus spent her lifetime, uncovering the neglected weirdness and hypocrite in the society. 

Arbus has once said when we meet someone on the street, we could only noticed his or her defects.   This is such an odd tendency.  Since people are dissatisfied with this manner,  we create an attempt of dissimulation.   So we always pretend to be usual, while others often notice your freakishness.

8.  Natural Beauty - Armpit Hair (Ben Hopper)

Mass Media's standard of beauty can never affect the natural beauty of a women.

9. Freaky tongue

 This is the most disgustingly attractive tongue I have ever seen.

Hong Kong is so so ssoooooooo hot.  After sweating (a waterfall), you can touch and smell it .  So fresh so good!
